Bushfire Protection

Crimsafe screens rated for the highest bushfire attack level, BAL-FZ.

Tested performance

59% fire attenuation. BAL-FZ rated.

Crimsafe screens achieved a fire attenuation rating of 59%, meaning they reduce radiant heat transmission by more than half. This makes them suitable for the most demanding fire risk environments in Australia.

Crimsafe security screens can be used for the highest level in bushfire protection (BAL-FZ). BAL-FZ is the most extreme classification under the Australian Standard AS 3959, covering properties that may face direct flame contact during a bushfire.

In addition to radiant heat reduction, Crimsafe screens provide an important layer of ember blocking capability. Embers can travel kilometres ahead of a fire front; preventing them from entering a home through open windows or doors significantly reduces the risk of ignition from within.

BAL ratings explained

Understanding bushfire attack levels

BAL LevelDescription
BAL-LOWMinimal bushfire risk. Standard construction acceptable.
BAL-12.5Low risk. Ember attack from burning debris.
BAL-19Moderate risk. Embers and burning debris with some radiant heat.
BAL-29High risk. Increased radiant heat and significant ember attack.
BAL-40Very high risk. Significant radiant heat. High risk of ember attack.
BAL-FZFlame Zone. Highest level. Direct flame contact and extreme radiant heat. Crimsafe is rated for this level.

Your BAL rating is determined by a qualified assessor based on your property’s vegetation, slope, and proximity to fuel. If you are unsure of your rating, consult your local council or a bushfire consultant.

What to specify

Recommended products for bushfire zones

All Crimsafe products carry the 59% fire attenuation rating and ember blocking capability. For higher BAL ratings (BAL-29, BAL-40, BAL-FZ), Securelux recommends specifying Crimsafe Regular or above to ensure the full combination of impact resistance and fire performance.

If your property requires compliance documentation for a development approval or insurance purposes, Securelux can supply the relevant Crimsafe fire certification along with QBCC-compliant installation records.
