Lifecycle & Maintenance
Most homeowners compare security screen quotes on the upfront price. What matters is what your screens cost over 10 to 15 years, not just on install day.
In Brisbane's climate, with high humidity, storms, salt air (even well inland) and UV exposure, the real comparison is lifecycle cost, not the number on the first page of a quote.
Why cheap screens cost more over time
Budget security screens use thinner mesh (typically 0.7 to 0.8mm), lighter aluminium frames, and simpler attachment methods like glue or wedge systems. They are manufactured to a price point, not a performance standard. Over a realistic timeframe in Queensland conditions, these screens commonly show mesh sagging and distortion after a few years of sun exposure, frame corrosion around rivets and attachment points, lock failure from cheaper hardware, mesh pulling away from frames under repeated door impacts, and cosmetic deterioration requiring replacement even before security failure.
The typical outcome is that budget screens need replacing within 5 to 8 years, meaning you buy and install twice (or more) within the lifespan of a single quality product.
What a Crimsafe screen installed by Securelux delivers over time
| Factor | Budget screen (typical) | Crimsafe via Securelux |
|---|---|---|
| Expected lifespan | 5 to 8 years in QLD conditions | 10 to 15+ years with proper care |
| Replacement cycles (over 15 yrs) | 2 to 3 full replacements | Usually none, one install |
| Maintenance required | Frequent: mesh stretches, locks seize, frames corrode | Low: periodic rinse, occasional silicone on tracks |
| Corrosion resistance | Basic powder coat, rivets exposed | 304 structural mesh, Tef-Gel, Saltwater Series gel and high-durability powder coat |
| Post-install support | Manufacturer warranty only, you chase it | SecureCare: direct support, 12-month workmanship warranty, flat-fee call-outs |
| Insurance impact | May not meet insurer requirements for premium discounts | Crimsafe is widely recognised by insurers, potential premium reductions |
| Property value | Minimal, often removed before sale | Positive impact, buyers recognise and value Crimsafe |
Maintenance: what is actually required?
Securelux recommends a simple maintenance routine for Crimsafe screens to keep them performing and looking their best.
- Every 3 to 6 months: rinse screens with clean water using a garden hose. In coastal areas or near busy roads, do this monthly.
- Annually: apply a light silicone-based lubricant to sliding door tracks and lock mechanisms.
- After storms: check for debris build-up in tracks and around frame seals. Remove with a soft brush.
- Avoid: pressure washers, abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals on the mesh or powder-coated surfaces.
The honest trade-offs
- The upfront cost is genuinely higher than budget alternatives. There is no way around that.
- If you plan to sell the property within 2 to 3 years and want to spend as little as possible now, a budget screen may suit your needs.
- Crimsafe 304 mesh is not marine-grade 316 stainless steel: it relies on powder coating, Santoprene insulation and Tef-Gel for corrosion resistance rather than the inherent chloride resistance of 316. For most Queensland homes, including many coastal properties, this performs very well over the long term. For properties within direct salt spray zones, we discuss the specifics during consultation.
- No security screen is maintenance-free. Even Crimsafe requires periodic cleaning, especially in harsh environments.
The premium you pay upfront is not a luxury. It is a decision to avoid the cost, hassle and disruption of replacing cheap screens multiple times. For most homeowners who plan to stay in their property five years or longer, it costs less in total.
